The Paris Apartment By Lucy Foley Summary

(Ben-Journalist. Jacques’s Business-Wine. Theo- The person working with Ben)

The prologue opens with Ben writing an important scoop about the apartment he was living in. The apartment had something rotten at its core. It was beautiful, but it was hiding many secrets that needed to come out. As a journalist, it was his duty to expose the truth. He had been writing an article concerning the building he was living in. It was at this moment that his sister Jess wanted his help. She wanted a place to live for a few days and Ben had no other choice but to help her out. So he was recording a voice note, informing Jess that he lived on the 3rd floor of the building when someone entered his apartment. Someone who was not supposed to have access to his place.

Jess was 3 hours late by the time she reached Ben’s apartment, and the voice note she had received from Ben was the last time she had heard his voice. She tried calling and texting but there was no response from Ben’s side. After waiting outside with no answer from the intercom, she decided to pick the lock of the door herself and entered his apartment.

Fast forward, It’s been a day, and there is still no sign of him.  No one in the apartment but Mimi had seen Ben. Even though Ben was an extremely charming person, the residents of the apartment avoided talking about him. After going through his apartment, she decided to borrow money from his wallet. Apart from money, there was a mysterious metal card in Bens’ wallet, and she also found the cell phone number of Theo, the person Ben was working with.

So she decided to meet Theo. Theo was expecting a scoop from Ben, but Ben never arrived at their meeting. Not knowing what else to do, Jess gave Theo the metal card– in the hopes that he might be able to find something. Also, Theo asked if he could hear Ben’s voice note. They used noise-canceling headphones to listen. Here, Jess was able to hear the last words that Ben had uttered to his intruder. When he asked what the person was doing in his apartment, Jess could detect fear in his voice.

Jess is certain that something happened to Ben. As time passes by, she starts talking to the other people living in the apartment. She gets to know about Sophie, The concierge, Jacques, Antoine, Mimi, and Nick.

  • Sophie is 50 years old and is married to her husband Jacques, who is the owner of the building.
  • Jacques is not a nice man. He owns a wine business
  • Nick was Ben’s friend, and they had lost contact after the last trip they had taken to Amsterdam during college.
  • Mimi had a crush on Ben, and
  • Antoine was a hostile man, and he was living on the first floor.

As the lies start to unravel, Jess discovers that Nick, Mimi, Antoine are all siblings and that Sophie is their stepmother. Jacques is the father of Mimi, Antoine, and Nick, and Sophie is actually from Russia and not France. Jacques was manipulative and emotionally abusive towards his children. And they were really wealthy. She found this out after sneaking into Jacques’s study and looking at their old family picture.

Theo and Jess meet again, And he told her about the metal card Ben had. It was used to get entry into the club that was owned by Jacques. Theo and Jess used the card to sneak into the club and a woman working in that club told them about the illegal business carried out. Rich people paid extra money for the wines in the club. This excess money spent was to get sex services from women that were brought through human trafficking. A person ordered wine depending on the type of girl he wanted for his sexual pleasure. The most expensive wine meant that they wanted the best girl in the club. And the vintage meant any ordinary girl would do. Ben was investigating this as a journalist and he was going to write a scoop on it.

Mimi was Sophie’s daughter, and she had fallen in love with Ben. She sneaked into his apartment a day before he disappeared. She came to know that her mother Sophie and Ben were sleeping together. Mimi could not believe what she was reading. And she was angry and hurt because of it. So she told Nick about Ben’s article, and Nick in return told his father Jacques.

So the person that entered Ben’s apartment while recording the voice note was Jacques. And Mimi was again watching all this through her balcony. As her father started attacking Jacques, Mimi could not take it.  She ran to Ben’s apartment with a knife in her hand because she could not watch Ben getting hurt. When she opened the door and tried to help Ben, she ended up attacking her father with a knife.
