This is a Book Review That Takes a Look at The Novel I’m Telling The Truth But I’m Lying By Bassey Ikpi.
 
I’m telling the truth, but I’m lying is a compilation of short essays written by Bassey’s. In simple words, This bookmarks important events in Bassey Ikpis’s life, which made her into the strong woman that she is today. These essays that she writes, make it feel like we are looking at Bassey’s personal diary instead. We are given access to her emotionally intimate moments, which further shows us all that she was dealing with.

Bassey Ikpi is a Poet, writer, and mental health advocate. Being an artist and a spokesperson, she would appear confident on stage. But behind the scenes, she was actually dealing with a tumult of emotions. Her mental health was deteriorating and as anyone would guess, It was not a great feeling for her.
 
She has lived in Nigeria since she was a child. Bassey cycled between intense joy and terrible depression during her adolescence in Oklahoma. By the time Bassey was in her early 20s, She was traveling from places while channeling her life into art. But due to her mental health suffering, culminating in a breakdown, leading to hospitalization. And finally, she was diagnosed with Rapid Cycling Bipolar two disorder.
 
The author provides us with access to her mental health, which expands our understanding of it. They talk about feelings, confusion, shame, family dynamics, and medication. Our author is completely honest about her thoughts and feelings after she discovered her diagnosis. She was in denial of it. She couldn’t fathom the fact that she would have to take medication for the rest of her life. This book is raw, and it makes us realize how hard it can be to deal with such highs and lows in someone’s life.

This book personally taught me to not assume, To be open and vulnerable. To give a shoulder to someone who might need it and above all, To BE Kind.
